Why Serve?

Serving on the Board of Directors or Council of Regents is one of the most powerful ways to make a lasting impact.

As a member of the Board, you will be part of the governing body of the Association, responsible for:

• Providing oversight, direction, and leadership for RHAWA
• Guiding strategy, priorities, and policy decisions
• Ensuring the organization operates in the best interest of its members
• Upholding accountability for programs, initiatives, and outcomes

You will help shape advocacy efforts, strengthen member resources, and advance initiatives that support safe, sustainable, and accessible housing across Washington. You will also join a respected network of leaders actively working to move the industry forward.

What to Expect

RHAWA leadership is designed to be impactful without being overwhelming.

• Board of Directors
  Two-year terms beginning January 1 following election
  Eligible for consecutive terms
  Meets monthly (up to three hours per meeting)

• Council of Regents (COR)
  Up to four consecutive two-year terms
  Terms begin January 1 following election

In addition to meetings, leaders are expected to actively participate in events, outreach, and advocacy efforts where much of the connection, influence, and impact happens.

• A track record of involvement in committees, projects, or community initiatives
• A commitment to RHAWA’s mission and members

• A willingness to mentor and support future leaders

Effective leaders understand how to balance different perspectives while keeping the organization’s broader goals front and center.

Eligibility Requirements

To run for the Board of Directors or Council of Regents, you must:

• Be at least 18 years old
• Be a RHAWA member in good standing (or designated representative) for at least one year prior to election
• Have served on a standing committee for at least one year prior to a COR election
• Have served on the Council of Regents for at least one year prior to a Board election
• Reside in Washington State and own rental housing within the state (or serve as a designated representative)
• Maintain eligibility throughout your term of service

Board service is part of a leadership pathway that builds experience over time. Members begin with committee service, then move to the Council of Regents, and ultimately to the Board of Directors.

How the Process Works

Here’s what to expect:

• August 31 – Application deadline
• September – Nominating Committee reviews applications and selects candidates
• October 14 – Election at RHAWA’s ENGAGE26 Annual Business Meeting
• January 1 – New leadership terms begin

3. If nominating someone else, include a brief statement explaining why they’re a strong candidate
