Description: When you think of risk management for your rental business, fair housing training might not be top of mind, but it's critical. Even the most fair and ethical landlords can receive hefty fines for fair housing violations. In this seminar, you and your partners and/or employees will learn:

  • A brief history and core principles of Fair Housing Law.
  • Protected classes in various jurisdictions, including source of income and criminal history.
  • How to process accommodation requests, including use of service animals.
  • Key areas of landlord risk for fair housing claims in the tenancy lifecycle.
  • How to apply best practices and decision making in various landlord-tenant relation situations.

Instructor: Chris Benis practices law with Hecker Wakefield & Feilberg, P.S. in Seattle, WA representing property management firms, individual real estate investors, and others in the real estate industry. Chris attended the University of Washington, where he received a B.A. in Political Science, a Master of Urban Planning and J.D. from its School of Law. He is a regular speaker and author on topics related to property management, drawing from over 30 years' experience as a “second generation” real estate investor. Chris currently serves as Legal Counsel for the Rental Housing Association of Washington (RHA) and is a past-President of the organization.
